Product information

The flywheel physical energy storage system is an electromechanical device that converts and stores energy. It stores kinetic energy through the high-speed rotation of the flywheel and converts this energy to and from electricity using a motor-generator system that operates coaxially with the flywheel. High-speed magnetic levitation flywheels are advantageous due to their high safety, high rotational speed, low power consumption, and long lifespan. With a prefabricated container deployment option, this represents the future of flywheel energy storage technology.

Vycon's magnetic levitation flywheel energy storage products utilize a five-degrees-of-freedom active magnetic bearing system. The flywheel is suspended without contact inside a sealed vacuum container, rotating at an ultra-high speed of up to 41,000 revolutions per minute, boasting the highest power density in the industry. These products can perform over 2 million charge-discharge cycles and have a lifespan of up to 20 years.

Applications of Vycon Flywheel Energy Storage Technology:

  • Power Systems: Vycon achieved the first application of a megawatt-class flywheel energy storage system for frequency regulation in power systems in China. The company implemented the largest flywheel/hybrid energy frequency regulation power station in the country. Since 2020, Vycon has successfully deployed the first 35kV grid-connected megawatt-class flywheel energy storage project, the first hybrid flywheel-lithium battery frequency regulation project, and the first integrated single wind turbine energy storage system for inertia response and primary frequency regulation. The "Megawatt-class Flywheel Energy Storage System for Inertia and Frequency Support in New Energy Power Stations," developed in collaboration with China National Nuclear Corporation and China Three Gorges Corporation, was included in the National Energy Administration's 2021 Major Technical Equipment Catalog, making it the only major equipment selected in the power frequency regulation field.
  • Microgrid Systems: Flywheel energy storage systems can effectively mitigate load fluctuations, improve the power quality of microgrids, and enhance the safety and reliability of electricity supply.
  • Data Centers, Industrial, Telecom, and Medical Sectors: Flywheel energy storage products can replace traditional lead-acid batteries to create high-reliability, high-quality power systems, providing stable, uninterruptible power for critical loads. These products have already been successfully deployed in high-profile projects such as the opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, high-altitude field hospitals, the Starbucks Suzhou Industrial Park, and the Shenzhen Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
  • Energy Efficiency: Flywheel energy storage systems can be applied to energy recovery in sectors such as rail transit and oil drilling. The products have been deployed at scale in metro systems and oil drilling platforms both domestically and internationally.
